In this episode, Ben talks about creativity and how it can have the ability to make new things exist; generating ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and even entertaining ourselves.
Creativity can be thought of as the ability to perceive the world in novel ways, unearth hidden patterns, make connections between seemingly unrelated phenomena, and generate solutions. It includes a creative process of making new connections between old ideas or recognizing relationships between concepts.
Thinking creatively doesn’t mean you have to start with nothing and make something. Instead, you take building blocks that you already have and construct them in an original way.
Ben then talks about the creative process and shares the five steps to produce remarkable ideas:
1 - Gather new material
2 - Thoroughly work over the materials in your mind
3 - Step away from the problem
4 - Let your idea return to you
5 - Shape and develop your idea based on feedback
Ben then explains that creativity matters. Developing creative sensibilities and habits enhances the quality of life for people. Opportunities for people to be creative during the years spent in school ultimately contribute to lives that are joyful, productive, meaningful, and abundant.
Creativity matters because of the intrinsic value of creative acts. It is also because creative pursuits can enhance learning in other subject areas and support productive habits of lifelong learning.
To set yourself apart in the world, nourish your creative side and become a creative genius, Ben gives six tips:
1 - Keep a notebook handy to capture your ideas
2 - Ask better questions to get betters answers
3 - Be a voracious reader
4 - Seek out new experiences
5 - Become a whole-brain thinker
6 - Set aside time for a genius hour
